NAME: Tlingit meaning "people."



GEOGRAPHY: The Tlingit tribe lives in Alaska and Yukon Canada. The same area as where they previously lived.



FOOD: Their food consisted mostly of goats, deer, sea otters, fish, birds, eggs, and berries. They did not eat bears though, as they were thought to be much like humans.



HAIR & CLOTHING: They wore breech cloths, skirts, cloaks, tunics and leggings made from cedar tree bark. The clothing was decorated with many beads, embroidery and tribal designs. They had a blanket callled the "Chilikat" which is made from cedar bark and goat hairs.



SHELTER: They lived in plank houses which were made of wood and were often decorated with tribal designs and totem poles. Some lived in teepees.



MOBILITY: The Tlingit mostly traveled in dugout canoes. They had a trading organization in which they traded as far as Hawaii.
